The Department of Art & Culture, History, and Antiquity of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, is seeking to fill a 0.8 position in Ancient History (tenure track).

The successful applicant will be teaching in our interdisciplinary BA programme in Ancient Studies as well as in our Master’s and Research Master’s programmes in Classics and Ancient Civilizations. These programmes are offered in cooperation with the University of Amsterdam within the framework of the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). In addition, the successful applicant will be teaching in the BA programme in History of the Vrije Universiteit.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong and innovative research agenda, who is committed to writing applications in order to obtain research funding. A track record of cooperation with other relevant disciplines will be considered an asset.

In addition to teaching and doing research, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the organization and administration of our programmes and to play a part in the life of the Department and of the ACASA community.

REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate has:
• a PhD in Ancient History or Ancient Studies on a subject in Greek, Roman, or Near Eastern history from any period between 1000 BCE and 800 CE • a demonstrable capacity and willingness to operate beyond the boundaries of one cultural or geographical area in teaching and in research, combining, for instance, Greek and Near Eastern History • a strong affinity with interdisciplinary research and teaching and with a global approach to history • an excellent publication record fitting the stage of her or his career, preferably including a monograph (or monograph under review) and peer reviewed articles • relevant teaching experience as well as a teaching qualification (BKO/UTQ or similar), or a willingness to obtain such qualification within the first two years of appointment, and an interest in novel, inspiring teaching methods • a strong cooperative attitude, team spirit, and willingness to engage in collaborative research and teaching duties • the ability to communicate and teach in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking) • a knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn Dutch within a reasonable period of time (within two years) (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking, all in view of day-to-day communication and administrative tasks — most teaching is in English)

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?
We offer a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor initially for the duration of 5 years, starting 1 March 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Tenure can be achieved if the faculty criteria for Assistant Professor are fulfilled. For the duration of the tenure track, performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, attempts to acquire research funding either individually or in consortia, academic service, and outreach. After a successful evaluation, permanent employment will be granted.

On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €۳,۹۷۴ (scale 11) and a maximum of €۵,۴۳۹ (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the Dutch university job ranking system and is vacant for 0.8 FTE.
