▪️The Rituals of the Zoroastrians from Antiquity to the Present Day
Zoroastrian rituals are still accompanied by the recitation of texts in Avestic, an ancient Iranian language, in India, Iran and in the diaspora. These texts were probably composed before the 5th century BCE for the performance of similar rituals. Zoroastrianism is thus characterized by one of the longest ritual continuities in the world.
The lecture will discuss the arguments that support this thesis, contrary to the previously held position that the rituals were reinvented in Late Antiquity. Despite this tradition, there are also important differences between contemporary and reconstructed performances of antiquity. Probably the most important, besides a general tendency toward reduction and simplification, is the abandonment of animal sacrifice. This custom and its importance among Zoroastrians in antiquity will receive special attention in the lecture.
